Shade Enough For Two
High upon this hilltop,
a single tree does stand,
spreading shade enough for two,
across a velvety grassy land.
With our future ahead of us,
my sweet Michael and me,
would sit and make our plans,
in the shade for two of this tree.
When Michael received news,
ordering him to a senseless war,
he promised to make it back alive,
and not leave me wanting more.
I still come to this hilltop,
and I wail out in misery,
with a baby not yet due,
and Michael buried under me.
Plans of naught had been made,
where this single tree does stand,
spreading shade enough for two,
across a now bleak and barren land.
